  51.    1.1. Microsoft DirectX

  53.      The Windows 95 version of C&C:RA is a Microsoft DirectX application.
  54.      Version 3.0 of Microsoft DirectX is included on the CD and you have
  55.      the option to install it when C&C:RA is installed.
  56.  
  57.      If you have difficulty running Windows 95 after these new
  58.      Microsoft DirectX drivers have been installed, please contact
  59.      your local Microsoft subsidiary, or write:

  68.      All Microsoft DirectX drivers are located in the Dxsetup folder
  69.      off of the root of the CD. To reinstall the Microsoft DirectX
  70.      drivers go into the Dxsetup folder and run Dxsetup.exe.

  72.    1.2. Known video card problems
  73.  
  74.      Here are some hints and tips for specific video cards found
  75.      while testing C&C:RA under Windows 95.
  76.  
  77.      1.2.1. S3 TRIO video cards
  78.  
  79.        We have noticed corruption on screen during both game and movies
  80.        with some (but not all) examples of video cards with this chipset.
  81.        There is no specific workaround but you should check with your
  82.        video card manufacturer for updated driver information.
  83.  
  84.      1.2.2. Screen distorts after installing Microsoft DirectX
  85.  
  86.        We've found that video monitor settings may need to be
  87.        adjusted after installing the Microsoft DirectX video drivers.
  88.        If your screen distorts, or is shifted horizontally or vertically,
  89.        you can return it to normality by adjusting the controls on your
  90.        monitor. You should only need to do this once.
  91.  
  92.      1.2.3. Unable to allocate primary video buffer
  93.  
  94.        If you receive an "Unable to allocate primary video buffer
  95.        - Aborting." error message try reinstalling the Microsoft DirectX
  96.        drivers. If reinstalling the Microsoft DirectX drivers does not solve
  97.        this problem, then that means that your video card manufacturer has
  98.        not updated their video drivers to be Microsoft DirectX compliant.
  99.        Call your video card manufacturer for updated drivers.

  102.    1.3. Uninstalling Red Alert
  103.  
  104.      After running the Uninstall program, if the Red Alert group is
  105.      still present, try rebooting your computer. This should clean up
  106.      the Red Alert start menu folder.
  107.  
  108.    1.4. Virtual Memory Settings
  109.  
  110.      C&C:RA may need to use more RAM than is present on your system.
  111.      Windows 95 automatically takes care of this by using what is
  112.      known as "Virtual Memory" - it uses space on your hard disk
  113.      to simulate the memory it needs and swaps data back and forth
  114.      from your hard disk as required. Windows 95 allows you to manually 
  115.      set the amount of hard drive space it uses for Virtual Memory:
  116.      WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT DO THIS! To let Windows 95
  117.      manage the Virtual Memory, go to the Windows 95 START menu,
  118.      select SETTINGS\CONTROL PANEL, then double-click SYSTEM, click
  119.      PERFORMANCE\FILE SYSTEM\VIRTUAL MEMORY and then select "Let
  120.      Windows manage my virtual memory settings (recommended)".

  122.    1.5. Microsoft PowerToys
  123.  
  124.      If you have the Microsoft PowerToys system extensions installed
  125.      on your system (including QuickRes and FlexiCD) you may experience
  126.      a black screen upon booting C&C:RA, although the sounds may still
  127.      be audible. If this happens, you should remove the MicroSoft
  128.      PowerToys while playing C&C:RA.

  132.  2. General Troubleshooting
  133.  
  134.    2.1. CD-changers and multi-drives
  135.  
  136.      C&C:RA does not support multiple CD-ROM drives or CD-changers and
  137.      assumes that you only have one CD-ROM drive. If you have more than
  138.      one CD-ROM drive, you should insert the C&C: Red Alert CD you are using
  139.      into the first CD driver letter. For example, if you have drives E:, F:
  140.      and G:, your C&C:RA CD should be inserted into the E: drive.

  142.    2.2. Microsoft Home Mouse and Natural Keyboard
  143.  
  144.      If you are using a Microsoft Home Mouse, the Microsoft Natural
  145.      Keyboard or are using Microsoft's IntelliPoint Tools and
  146.      Controls Software, having the "Sonar" setting on under "Visibility"
  147.      in the "Mouse Properties" section in the "Control Panel" can cause
  148.      C&C:RA to crash.  Please turn this setting off when playing
  149.      C&C:RA.

  151.    2.3.  Display Problems
  152.  
  153.      If you experience any problems with the appearance of the graphics in 
  154.      C&C:RA, then try the following:
  155.  
  156.      The below entries are present under the [Options] section in redalert.ini.
  157.      Use any text editor to modify these entries, save the file as plain ASCII text.
  158.      experiment with the settings to see if it fixes your problem.
  159.      The defaults are as shown.

  168.    2.4.  CD Presence
  169.         
  170.      You must always have the CD installed in your CD drive to play the Red Alert 
  171.      Demo, failure to do so will result in a "Unable to read scenario" error message.

  173.    2.5.  Compressed Hard Drives
  174.  
  175.      You must have 30 MB of free hard drive space to install the Red Alert Demo. If you are
  176.      using a disk compression system (such as DriveSpace) you must double the amount of 
  177.      drive space needed. (Aprox. 60 MB) This is accountable to not every file being compressed
  178.      at 2:1.  We do not recommend the use of drive compression systems with the Red Alert Demo.
